Community Partner Spotlight: Albertina Kerr
Creating safer spaces where independence, dignity, and possibility can grow
For more than a century, Albertina Kerr has helped people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and mental health challenges lead fuller, more self-determined lives in their communities. Founded in 1907, Albertina Kerr is one of the largest providers of services and support for individuals with I/DD in Oregon, offering programs that include youth crisis psychiatric care, residential care programs, supported employment services, and inclusive day programs.
At the heart of that work is a simple but powerful belief: every individual deserves the opportunity to live with dignity, safety, belonging, and purpose.
Through compassionate care, specialized programs and a commitment to inclusion, Albertina Kerr helps children, youth, and adults build confidence, access opportunity, and participate fully in community life. Their work strengthens not only the lives of the people they directly serve, but also the families, caregivers, and support networks that walk alongside them every day.
Meeting critical needs with compassion
Across Oregon, families continue to seek resources and support systems that help individuals with complex needs thrive. For Albertina Kerr, meeting those needs requires more than dedicated staff and innovative programs—it also requires safe, welcoming environments where individuals can receive support and care.
That reality inspired a conversation between Albertina Kerr and Oregon State Credit Union about how community investment might best support the organization’s mission. Rather than focusing solely on a traditional sponsorship opportunity, the discussion centered on understanding where support could create the greatest impact.
“Meaningful community partnerships allow us to invest in the environments where healing happens. We’re grateful to Oregon State Credit Union for recognizing that thoughtful improvements to our care spaces help us provide the highest quality, person-centered support for youth experiencing a mental health crisis.” — Allison Stark, CEO
Supporting safety, independence, and well-being
Through those conversations, a critical safety enhancement project emerged: new secure bedroom doors, that included the addition of windows, for Albertina Kerr’s Psychiatric Crisis Center for Youth. The project included 24 doors serving youth receiving crisis mental health services, with OSCU committing $7,500 as a lead contribution intended to help encourage additional support and funding for the broader project.
While a window may seem like a simple improvement, its impact reaches much further.
For youth receiving care, it helps create a safer environment. For families, it provides greater peace of mind. For care teams, it strengthens their ability to provide support in a setting intentionally designed around safety, dignity, and well-being.
This type of investment reflects something Albertina Kerr understands well: meaningful outcomes are often built on foundational improvements that make quality care possible. It also reflects a shared belief that community impact is most powerful when resources are aligned with genuine needs and lasting outcomes.
For Oregon State Credit Union, the partnership exemplifies a growing focus on supporting initiatives that create meaningful and lasting community benefit. By listening to community partners and investing in opportunities that address real community needs, OSCU seeks to maximize the positive impact of its community investments and help strengthen organizations already making a difference.
Looking ahead
The ripple effect of a project like this extends far beyond a single improvement.
Safe facilities help individuals receive services more effectively. Strong community partnerships help organizations direct resources where they are needed most. Investments that strengthen care today help create opportunities, belonging, and independence for years to come.
That same spirit of collective impact is reflected in Albertina Kerr’s annual Together for Albertina Kerr event, which brings community members together in support of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health challenges. The event serves as both a celebration of the organization’s mission and an opportunity to invest in its future impact.
Albertina Kerr reminds us that stronger communities are built when every individual has access to the support, dignity, and opportunities needed to thrive. Oregon State Credit Union is honored to partner with organizations like Albertina Kerr that are helping make that vision a reality every day. Interested in learning more?
