Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Protecting your accounts starts with you

Cybersecurity Awareness Month: Protecting Your Accounts Starts With You

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month — a reminder that keeping your financial information safe is a shared responsibility. At Oregon State Credit Union, we’re committed to providing secure digital tools that help protect your accounts while giving you convenient access to your finances anytime, anywhere.

As cybercriminals become more sophisticated, we’ve strengthened the security of our new digital banking platform with enhanced protections designed to help keep your information secure. Combined with smart online habits, these features can help you stay one step ahead of fraudsters.

Advanced digital banking protection: new security features working behind the scenes

Our new digital banking platform includes several advanced security features designed to help protect your accounts:

Enhanced Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Members can choose to enable multi-factor authentication for every login, adding an extra layer of protection beyond a username and password. This helps ensure that only you can access your accounts, even if your password is compromised.

Intelligent fraud monitoring

We’ve increased our fraud prevention and monitoring efforts using advanced AI-powered tools that help identify suspicious activity and potential threats more quickly than ever before.

Login pattern detection

Our systems can recognize unusual login behaviors and patterns that may indicate unauthorized account access attempts.

Device and location monitoring

We monitor unexpected changes in devices and login locations, helping detect potentially fraudulent activity before it becomes a larger issue.

Stronger protection against account takeovers

Enhanced safeguards help protect against using stolen credentials and account takeover attempts, two common tactics fraudsters use to gain access to online accounts.

While these security measures provide powerful protection, one of the most important parts of account security is knowing how to recognize scams and fraud attempts.

Don’t hand over the keys to your accounts

We are seeing an increase in fraud attempts where criminals impersonate financial institutions through phone calls, text messages, emails, and even social media messages. These scams often create a sense of urgency and can look surprisingly legitimate.

At Oregon State Credit Union, we may contact you about potential fraud activity on your account. However, it’s important to know the difference between a legitimate fraud alert and a scam.

What we may ask

If we contact you regarding potential fraud, we may ask you to confirm whether a transaction is valid or if you recognize account activity.

What we will never ask

We will never ask you to provide:

  • Your debit or credit card number
  • Card expiration date
  • Card security code (CVV)
  • Online banking username or password
  • One-time passcodes or verification codes sent to your phone or email
  • Sensitive account information through an unsolicited call, text, or email

We also will never send a fraud alert asking you to click on a link and provide personal or account information.

Common fraud red flags

Requests for sensitive information

If someone claiming to be Oregon State Credit Union asks for your card details, login credentials, or a one-time passcode, it’s a scam. End the conversation immediately.

Pressure to move money quickly

Fraudsters often claim your money is at risk and urge you to transfer funds or wire money to a “safe” account. This is a common scam tactic.

Overpayment or reimbursement requests

If someone sends you money and then asks you to send part of it back or forward it elsewhere, proceed with extreme caution. These schemes often result in financial loss.

Simple ways to protect yourself

Cybersecurity doesn’t have to be complicated. A few simple habits can go a long way:

  • Enable multi-factor authentication on your accounts
  • Use strong, unique passwords for online services
  • Avoid clicking links in unexpected emails or text messages
  • Keep your devices and apps updated
  • Never share sensitive information unless you initiated the contact
  • Review account activity regularly
  • Trust your instincts if something feels suspicious

When in doubt, verify

Scammers rely on urgency, fear, and trust. Taking a moment to pause and verify can prevent a costly mistake.

If you’re ever unsure whether a text, email or phone call is legitimate, contact Oregon State Credit Union directly by calling 541-714-4000, using our online chat feature, or visiting a local branch.

This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, take advantage of the enhanced protection available through our new digital banking platform and stay informed about the latest fraud tactics. Together, we can help keep your accounts and personal information secure.

Because the best security tool isn’t just technology — it’s knowing when something doesn’t look right.
