Trust by Design: As Seen in Forbes & Fortune

As it continues to scale into new markets and channels, Oregon State Credit Union is approaching modernization and growth by building digital and in-person member experiences embedded with trust.

On November 22, 2025, Oregon State Credit Union (OSCU) cut the ribbon for its Wilsonville branch. Less than a year later, in August 2026, the credit union will open a branch in Cedar Mill, marking its 16th and 17th branches, respectively. Modernization initiatives are top of mind during this growth, including a brand-new digital banking platform that makes money management easier.

While OSCU is growing at a rate outpacing many in its industry, the team believes that growth just for growth’s sake isn’t worthy growth at all. Member trust — a strategic initiative continually discussed at multiple levels of the organization — is intentionally earned and strengthened as the credit union expands. That means OSCU builds trust into the decision-making process, community outreach, and product and service offerings.

“Growth and modernization are only healthy if we can scale and stay true to who we are, remaining close to our communities and delivering a personal experience,” says Kim Sather, Chief Information Officer. “For any decisions we make at OSCU, such as designing technology, we have the discipline to only implement new initiatives if they continue to strengthen our relationships with our members. Will it provide them with more convenience, better product options, additional education, greater security, or a smoother experience?”

The member experience both at physical branches and through digital channels is central to the team’s growth strategy. When communicating with members — whether in person, digitally, or through brand messaging — trust shapes every interaction. When helping individuals manage money, the team at OSCU understands it’s important for members to know the credit union is truly representing their needs. By incorporating surveys and other feedback loops throughout member
interactions, the credit union can continually improve its processes.

“We’re upfront, we avoid jargon, and we’re clear and transparent when communicating so we can ensure we’re respecting our members’ time,” says John Nichols, Vice President of Marketing and Member Experience. “We’re working with people at the highest and lowest moments of their lives, so connecting with them on a human level is crucial.”

Innovation, Convenience, and Security

With the world at our fingertips, ease and accessibility are necessary for any institution that wants to thrive. OSCU designs its solutions with three factors in mind: innovation, experience, and security. The team is always looking for ways to delight members and make their money management simpler, whether through innovative offerings or by encouraging healthy risk aversion to protect members’ financial health.

Innovation, experience, and security go far beyond technological offerings. When members visit branches, call the credit union on the phone, or interact with the digital platform, OSCU strives to provide robust banking options that feel simple, yet welcoming and safe.

“As a credit union, our members are our owners. They’re the reason we exist. We want them to feel confident, regardless of how they interact with us,” says Jim Gibson, Chief Operations Officer. “Finances are intimidating, and we try to make them more approachable, while looking out for our members’ best interests. No matter what we do or where we grow, it’s always about the value we can provide to the individuals and communities we serve.”
