International Credit Union Day: Celebrating the credit union difference

International Credit Union Day: Celebrating the credit union difference

On Thursday, October 15, 2026, we’ll join credit unions around the world in celebrating International Credit Union Day®, a tradition that has been recognizing the positive impact of credit unions since 1948.

This year’s theme, “A Steady Signal in a Noisy World,” is a reminder that while the world is constantly changing, credit unions remain focused on something that never goes out of style: people helping people.

Credit unions were founded on the idea that financial services should put people first. That’s still true today. Unlike banks, credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperatives, which means we’re here to serve our members rather than outside shareholders. Every member has an equal voice, regardless of account balance, and our focus is on helping people achieve their financial goals while strengthening the communities we serve.

That people-first philosophy is what makes credit unions different. It inspires us to offer financial education, support local nonprofits and community events, provide scholarships, and help members find opportunities to improve their financial well-being. It’s also why trust continues to be one of the defining qualities of credit unions. Members know they can count on their credit union for guidance, support, and services designed with their best interests in mind.

While credit unions are deeply connected to their local communities, we’re also part of something much bigger. Today, more than 400 million members worldwide are served by over 67,000 credit unions in 100 countries, all united by a shared commitment to improving lives through cooperative finance.

Here at Oregon State Credit Union, we’re proud to carry that mission forward every day. Whether we’re helping someone buy their first home, save for college, grow a business, prepare for retirement, or navigate life’s unexpected moments, our goal is simple: help our members and communities thrive.

Celebrate with us!

International Credit Union Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the people who make our credit union special: our members.

We invite you to visit any Oregon State Credit Union branch on October 15 and enjoy complimentary refreshments and snacks while spending time with your local branch team. It’s our way of saying thank you for being part of our credit union family and helping us continue the tradition of people helping people.

We look forward to celebrating with you!
