Health Savings Account (HSA)

A Health Savings Account (HSA) is a savings account that can be used as part of a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). It allows you to pay for health expenses and build savings for future qualified medical health expenses on a tax-free basis. (Consult your tax professional for details.) You, your employer or another person can make contributions on your behalf.

Features of HSAs:

  • Savings account with a free Visa® debit card, instantly issued
  • Accumulated earnings are tax-deferred
  • Membership fee may be waived
  • No monthly service fee
  • No annual administration fee
  • Contributions are tax deductible and can be made throughout the year
  • Funds remain in your account from year to year; there's no “use it or lose it” each year like with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • You own your HSA account even if you change jobs or health insurance
  • Account is federally insured by the NCUA up to $250,000
